The effects of ecstasy (chemically known as MDMA) derive partly from an intensified release of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that transmits information in the brain. To a lesser extent, ecstasy also affects the release of noradrenaline (norepinephrine), which is described in the section on speed.
