How the brain works

Neurotransmitters

Neurons are situated close together, but they do not touch each other. The axon of one neuron points towards the dendrites of the next neuron. How are the signals transmitted between them?

This is carried out by so-called neurotransmitters, or nerve transmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemical substances that are capable of transmitting signals. The neurotransmitters are released by the axons and are picked up by adjacent neurons, which can relay the signal further.
