Tolerance: glutamate

Alcohol blocks glutamate receptors. When the neurons containing these receptors sense that some receptors have been blocked, they increase the sensitivity of the receptors and generate additional ones.

To continue blocking the excitatory action of glutamate, you need to drink more and more alcohol.
