Withdrawal: glutamate

If you abruptly stop drinking, the alcohol suddenly no longer blocks the receptors. Since additional receptors have been created and the receptors are over sensitised, large amounts of glutamate now bind to them. The neurons become overstimulated. This can give rise to withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia and, in the worst case, epilepsy.
